As you undoubtedly know by now, the eBook phenomenon is changing the publishing industry. Also called an electronic book or digital book, this is a book produced in digital form that can be read on various devices, such as iPad, Kindle, or Nook, to name a few. In 2011, Amazon claimed that its customers were now buying more Kindle books than all other books it was selling — paperbacks and hardbacks combined. As well, there has been a swarm of publishers entering the eBook market — both mainstream publishers as well as smaller presses. The competition is quite fierce.
Is there room in this business for a small firm like Hill Song Press? We don't know, and that's why we plan to publish an eBook in 2012 for one of our authors. On the basis of that test, we will make a decision as to whether this may be a profitable venue for us. While we certainly have the ability to convert word files into digital works, we lack the vast financial resources that larger presses have in taking risks in this field.
As a result, we are holding back on considering new clients for eBook publishing but, we will advise when we decide on a program for the eBook field.
